All passengers arriving at Halifax Stanfield from outside of Canada must report to Canada Border Services Agency and Citizenship and Immigration Canada for inspection.

We’re pleased to offer self-service options via the Primary Inspection Kiosks. The kiosks allow international air travellers arriving in Canada to verify travel documents, complete an on-screen declaration, and confirm identity using facial authentication.

Travellers can also save time at the border by completing their declaration in advance using the CanBorder – eDeclaration mobile app.

Travel Authorization

Canada has an entry requirement, known as an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), for visa-exempt foreign nationals travelling to Canada by air. These travellers need an eTA before they can board their flight to Canada. Exceptions include U.S. citizens and travellers with valid Canadian visas. Eligible travellers can apply online for an eTA. To find out more, visit Canada.ca/eTA.

If you fly to the United States from Canada often or fly into Canada from anywhere around the world, then NEXUS may be for you. Click here for more information on NEXUS.

Connecting in Halifax

If you departed from an International destination and are connecting in Halifax on your way to the United States, please visit our page for U.S. travel for information about requirements for travelling into the U.S. by air.

Duty-Free

Passengers transferring from flights originating from European Union countries are now permitted to carry their duty-free purchases onboard the aircraft in Security Tamper-Evident Bags (STEBs).

These clear plastic bags are specifically designed to hold duty-free liquids, aerosols, and gels purchased by passengers at duty-free retailers located after the security screening checkpoint in airports in European Union nations. Once sealed, the bag cannot be opened and resealed. If the bag has been tampered with in any way, it will no longer be considered secure.

For more information about Duty-Free purchases click here to visit the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority website.

Immigration

Citizenship and Immigration Canada has on-site staff to offer help and information to passengers entering Canada. Most visitors need a valid passport, and many require a visitor’s visa.

Food Inspection

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) provides inspection services at the airport to prevent the importation of bacteria, viruses or pests that could harm Canadian agriculture, including the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease.
