    PURPOSE AND SCOPE

    Your privacy is important to Halifax International Airport Authority (“HIAA“, “we”, “us” and “our”), and we are committed to ensuring that any personal information we collect is appropriately used, disclosed, and protected in compliance with applicable privacy laws.

    This privacy policy (the “Policy”) describes how and why we collect the personal information of individuals who use our products, services or facilities, including our website (https://hiaa.websitepreview.ca), as well as what we do with that information, including who we may share it with, and how we protect it.

    WHAT IS PERSONAL INFORMATION?

    “Personal information” means any information about an identifiable individual, which includes information that can be used on its own or with other information to identify a specific person including, for example, an individual’s name, date of birth, contact information (such as telephone number, home address, and email address), health information, financial information (e.g., bank account information or credit card number), and passport number.

    WHY DO WE COLLECT YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION?

    We collect personal information for the following purposes:

    • To develop, evaluate and improve our products, services, facilities and visitor relationships and experiences;
    • To present and deliver our products and services, including our website and its contents to you;
    • To process payment for the use of our products, services, and facilities;
    • To protect the safety and security of our operations and facilities;
    • To notify you about changes to the products, services, or facilities we offer or provide;
    • For identification purposes;
    • To communicate with you and provide you with information, products, or services that you request from us;
    • To allow you to participate in interactive features, social media, or similar features on our website;
    • For direct marketing purposes;
    • To fulfill the purposes for which you provided the information or that were described when it was collected, or any other purpose for which you provide it; and
    • To comply with legal and regulatory requirements.

    We take steps to ensure that the personal information that we collect about you is adequate and relevant, not excessive, and used for limited and specific purposes.  Other than as set out in this Policy, we will not sell, trade, rent, or give your information to any third party.

    HOW DO WE OBTAIN YOUR CONSENT?

    HIAA collects information directly from you when you use our products, services, and facilities, including when you visit our website, make customer service inquiries, answer customer satisfaction surveys, and when we respond to your inquiries.

    When you provide HIAA with your personal information, you consent to us using it as identified in this Policy, and for any other purpose we may describe when you provide the information.  We may ask for your express consent, such as asking you to check a box, when we collect sensitive personal information such as financial information, or when we ask for your consent to receive electronic marketing information.  We may also obtain your consent implicitly when we can reasonably conclude that you have given consent by your actions.  For example, your continued use of our products, services, or facilities indicates your consent to our collecting, using, and disclosing your personal information in accordance with this Policy.

    Where you have provided your consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information, you may refuse or withdraw your consent under certain circumstances. To withdraw your consent, if applicable, contact us at legal@hiaa.ca.  Please note that if you withdraw your consent we may not be able to provide you with some of our products and services, or access to our facilities.  We will explain the impact to you at the time to help you with your decision.

    If you have opted in to receive certain emails from us, but no longer wish to have your email address or other contact information used by HIAA for promotional purposes, you can opt-out by sending us an email to communications@hiaa.ca or by clicking the unsubscribe link we have included in the email.

    VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

    Since we cannot be everywhere at all times, we ensure the safe and efficient operation of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport (the “Airport”) by using 24-hour video surveillance throughout the Airport and the surrounding area.  We maintain, collect, and use personal information via video surveillance to:

    • Monitor the safety and security of people and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements;
    • Protect HIAA property and the property of our employees, passengers, contractors, business partners, and visitors to the Airport; and
    • Monitor Airport operations and improve HIAA services and facilities.

    If you visit the Airport, you will be deemed to have consented to video surveillance.  As noted above, the Airport is under video surveillance at all times for security and other purposes.  When you visit any of our premises, including our parking lots and outside areas, you may be recorded and any video surveillance may be collected, used, and disclosed in accordance with this Policy.

    DISCLOSURE OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

    We may share your personal information with our contractors, service providers, and other third parties we engage to support our operations and who are contractually obligated to keep personal information confidential, use it only for the purposes for which we disclose it to them, and to process the personal information with the same standards set out in this Policy.  We may disclose your personal information to fulfill the purpose for which you provide it or otherwise with your consent, and also to comply with any court order, law, or legal process, including to respond to any law enforcement, government, or regulatory request, in accordance with applicable law.

    We may use and disclose aggregated information about our visitors, and information that does not identify any individual, for legitimate business purposes without restriction.

    Please note, however, that we are not responsible for the collection, use, and disclosure of any personal information that may be collected by non-HIAA entities, including (but not limited to) the Canadian Border Services Agency, Transport Canada, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Services, on-site vendors, and other partners.  Please contact these organizations directly should you have any questions regarding their privacy practices.

    STORAGE AND SECURITY OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

    The security of your personal information is very important to us.  We use appropriate physical, electronic, and administrative measures designed to secure your personal information from accidental loss and from unauthorized access, use, alteration, and disclosure.

    Except as otherwise permitted or required by applicable law or regulation, we will only retain your personal information for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes we collected it for, including for the purposes of satisfying any legal, accounting, or reporting requirements.

    We may process, store, and transfer your personal information in and to a foreign country, with privacy laws that may not be as comprehensive as Canadian legislation. Government authorities in these countries may be able to obtain access to your personal information under their local laws.  Whenever we engage a service provider or disclose your information to a third party, we take all reasonable steps to ensure that the third party’s privacy and security standards adhere to this Policy and applicable Canadian privacy legislation.

    We also need your help in keeping your information safe and secure.  Unfortunately, the transmission of information via the Internet is not completely secure.  Although we do our best to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee the security of your personal information transmitted to our website.  Any electronic transmission of personal information is at your own risk. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the website.

    ACCESSING AND CORRECTING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION

    You have the right to request information from HIAA about the existence, use and disclosure of your personal information and to request access to or correction of your personal information.

    In certain circumstances, and as permitted or required by law, we may not be able to provide you with access to all of your personal information and will notify you of the reasons for such refusal.

    With respect to video surveillance, we reserve the right to refuse disclosure requests if doing so will compromise airport security or breach the privacy rights of other individuals. We also reserve the right to require that video surveillance be viewed in the presence of HIAA staff and that no copies are provided.  Depending on the circumstances, we may also require that anyone receiving a copy of video surveillance sign a non-disclosure agreement or other contract that limits what may be done with respect to the footage.
